This year for Mothers Day we are honoring the (many!) gifts our mothers have given us, including our love for crafting! For the next week, we will be featuring some of our team members on what the moms in their life have passed on to them.

“My mother was an expert knitter and crocheter. Back in the 50’s she would go to a store to get knitting patterns that weren’t written like today’s pattern but rather shapes of paper (like sewing patterns) to use as a template. That’s another level of knitting! I learned knitting and crocheting through her and my elementary school teacher Ms. Lerche.
When I grew up all German kids would learn crocheting and knitting in second grade and finish the famous “Topflappen” (pot holder), (unfairly) an object of many jokes.“
“I think one of the most important things my mother taught me is to just try things and to never give up. She and my later father were entrepreneurs and I think that spirit was passed down to me.“

Meet Meredith, our Creative Content Manager, on her creative mom Susan:
“My mom, Susan, is a jack of all trades when it comes to creating, making, designing, and crafting, but recently has found sewing her own clothing to be more than just a hobby – it’s a full-blown passion.

“Whether she’s sifting through stacks of hand-dyed textiles in a Balian marketplace or rifling through the dregs of a TJ Maxx clearance bin, she’s always on the hunt for a hidden gem that can be re-worked, re-purposed, or re-sewn into a one of a kind garment. Though friends and family continually tell her ‘you could sell these!’ she maintains that she sews clothing just for herself and her own pleasure. While sewing may not be MY strong suit, I know that my mother’s eye for design and appreciation for the handmade has fostered my love of all types of crafts from weaving to dying to jewelry making.”
