Nora has dedicated her professional life to building creative communities. Before launching CraftJam she’s founded Kollabora, the leading online DIY fashion community and network, reaching more than four million crafters every month. Before Kollabora, Nora co-founded BurdaStyle.com, with one million members BurdaStyle is the internet’s biggest sewing community. Nora grew up in a very crafty household in Detmold, Germany, went to university in Cairo, Egypt and now lives with her husband in New York City.

What do you usually do during the day?
I type, make, and move paper around (seriously.) Also, I started and run CraftJam!
Where did you grow up?
Beautiful little Detmold, a picturesque town in the Teutoburg Forest in northern Germany.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever made?
A spaceship from old boxes in second grade. My best friend Nici still talks about it.
What do you like about crafting?
I like creating new forms and shapes, paint colors that stick to my hands and the happy feeling crafting brings. I also like learning new skills, figuring out complicated things, being productive and not simply consuming something. But the best feeling? Making something that fits a person you love (like the sock I made below.)
What CraftJams have you attended and what did you make?
Every single one! That’s the beauty of my work. I made it all. (Several) arm knitted cowls, wire wrapped rings, wooden bead necklaces, snow globes (yes, we are going to have a snow globe CraftJam!) and more.
Why should people become CraftJammers?
Because while it’s social and fun, you’re actually being productive and creating something cool for you to keep or to give away as a present. It’s a win-win-win!
What’s your favorite drink while crafting?
Green tea and medium body red wine.
