Meet Alicia, our newest and super stylish JamMaster! Based in Brooklyn, Alicia is here to teach our CraftJam Academy: Jewelry 101, and Design And Paint Wooden Jewelry CraftJam, where you can design and create your own unique jewelry.
What’s your name? Pair it with an adjective that has the same first letter.
Ambitious Alicia, because I really try to go out and get things done (ha!)
What classes do you teach at CraftJam?
I teach Jewelry 101 and also Wood Bead Painting, so basically the jewelry classes!
How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting my entire life, almost since birth. It all started when I would make dresses out of fabric from the pillow factory my father worked at. I would “sew” it by using an electric stapler.
What do you like about crafting?
I love the sense of satisfaction it gives me when a project is done. I also like how therapeutic it is (well, most of the time!) the art of crafting is as well.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever made?
Hmmm, that’s a hard one…I remade a very beautiful wood computer desk into my jeweler’s workbench. It involved me purchasing a jigsaw and cutting out a large semi circle in the desk in my apartment!
What do you like about CraftJams?
CraftJams are like quilting bees, a place for people to get together and create and also get to know one another.
If you could CraftJam with anyone, who would it be?
Oooh! I’ve met so many people that were on my list of folks to see and hang out with…I would love to CraftJam with Lady Miss Kier, of Deee Lite fame. She is still my idol after all of these years and we could sing “Groove is in the Heart” while also embroidering together.
What’s the best advice you ever got?
“Be nice” – I really try to remember that wherever I go and whatever I do because it’s always nice to be a decent human being. Also the world is very, very small.
Best music to listen while crafting?
Disco disco disco!!! Or sexy 70’s music, you choose!
