Martina Martian is a traveling illustrator known for her lively 80s/90s inspired look. She has been featured by Teen Vogue and Cosmopolitan, and created content for Instagram, Snapchat, Reebok and ASOS. Martina is coming back to CraftJam this week for a special GuestJam series where she will be speaking with writer/editor Sahaj Kohli about how to abandon your boundaries and just create!

My name is Martina Martian and I am merry!

My craft of choice is illustration, and I started illustrating when I was 19.

I get my inspiration from my life experiences and 80s/90s graphics.

In my spare time I like to explore mountains.

My favorite supplies are a 0.5mm Artline pen, and my Wacom tablet.

My favorite thing about crafting is there is no right or wrong way to create.

What I love most about CraftJam is that it connects creative people.

My best tip for teaching someone a new craft is to give them space for their own creative style.

The best advice I’ve ever received is: “You’re going to spend the majority of your life working, so you might as well do something you love.”

I get out of a creative rut by writing and reflecting, having meaningful conversations with others.

My top three favorite Instagram accounts for creatives are @marisa.mu @manjitthapp and @raychponygold

My current project is dreaming up my next exhibition and taking my work into new mediums.

I started my business because I wanted to travel full time while doing what I love.

The hardest thing about running my own business is (the) inconsistency – you never know how much work you will get in a month.

The most important part of my business is that my branding and style stays authentic and consistent.

My advice to anyone looking to start their own business is to not to take it too seriously – it’s important that you love what you do first and foremost!
