While the season of beautiful summer blooms may be coming to an end, we’re holding on for just a bit longer with another beautiful rooftop CraftJam at GROW featuring one of our favorite ways to use those blooms: flower crowns!
Once reserved for May Day celebrations, brides and bridesmaids, and many a Coachella attendee, flower crowns have seen their fair share of revivals. Used throughout history as a symbol of status and accomplishment, as well as for sartorial flair, the flower crown has been the accessory for country girls, hippie kids, Ukrainian brides, and even Marie Antoinette.

This time the revival headed straight down the runway, and onto magazine covers, in the form of high fashion, avant garde styles that, quite literally, reach new heights. From Oscar de la Renta to Valentino, the flower crown has officially stepped out of the field and into fashion.
Most recently, two queens in their own right, Beyoncé and Rihanna both grace Vogue covers here in the US and across the pond sporting stunning halos of exotic blooms on the front page of that most holy of magazines: the September issue. Ringing in a new season of fashion, both covers embody the essence of the flower crown as a symbol of power and rebirth.
While Beyoncé’s blooms were the product of a group effort on the part of her styling team, headed up by Neal Farinah, Rihanna’s unique headpieces were crafted by Japanese artist and Jardins des Fleurs co-founder, Makoto Azuma who pre-ordered specialty rare blooms for the Vogue UK cover.
