CraftJam Academy: Learn to Crochet with The Queen Stitch

Our highly anticipated Crochet CraftJam is finally here! If you don’t yet know, or have been waiting to find out, the amazing things you can create with just a hook and some yarn, here is your chance!

Crochet is a fun and fast alternative to knitting that produces a thick fabric perfect for bags, clothing and accessories. In our three session Crochet CraftJam Academy, designer Katie Jagel from The Queen Stitch will introduce you to the basics of crochet and guide you through your first crochet projects, coasters and a scarf.

Through in-class demonstrations and weekly home assignments, you’ll learn the basics of crochet giving you the ability to follow thousands of existing patterns and maybe even design some of your own.

Students will learn the foundations of crochet – chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, and slip stitch – as well as simple increases, decreases and how to seam projects together. Students are able to complete endless projects on their own after taking this class.

The curriculum:

1st week: Introduction to crochet (4/5/2017)

  • Brief history and modern application of crochet
  • Reading a pattern
  • How to hold a hook
  • How to start a crochet project
  • Slip knot
  • The chain stitch
  •  The single crochet
  •  The half double crochet
  •  Homework: Coasters

2nd week: Review, additional stitches and start a new project (4/12/2017)

  • Review previous week and homework
  • Increases and decreases
  • The double crochet
  • The treble crochet
  • Homework: Scarf

3rd week: Review and further education (4/19/2017)

  • Finding patterns online
  • Working in the round versus working flat
  • Increasing and decreasing in half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet
  • Brief intro of specialty stitches and techniques – Front back post, pique, cables, top-stitching
  • Resources for further education
Katie Jagel

This class is beginner-friendly; no experience necessary! We will have all the supplies and materials ready for you, including yarn and hooks. Also, we are BYOB friendly, so bring a drink of your choice.

Katie Jagel is a modern crochet designer with a kitschy and colorful take on the fiber arts. Her company The Queen Stitch is known for its original and fun designs. She has been crocheting for over 10 years and enjoys eggs for breakfast, and good lipstick.
